Happy 30th, friend!

Let me get this out of the way immediately: I am more than a month behind on blog posts. I'm slacking and I can admit it. Hopefully now that I'm unemployed I can catch up. I'm sure the girls will let me be while I sit on my duff, play on the computer and sun bathe.
Right?
When Jake traveled to Kentucky/Tennessee back in May and left me to s-o-l-o parent it, I did what any single mom would do; I got a sitter (thanks, Sissie!) and headed to the casino for the evening. My good friend Kelly was celebrating her big three-oh and Kelly's husband Allen planned a surprise party for her. I admit, it was odd doing date-night as a single lady, but I managed to allow valet to park my car, let perfect strangers open doors and had I found someone to pay for my meal, I would have considered the entire evening a success.
2 outa three ain't bad.
I had a great evening meeting new people, swapping stories and celebrating with Kelly and Krew. Thanks for the invite, guys! It was a blasty-blast, s-o-l-o and all!

Happy birthday girl
Good job on the party planning, Allen!
Tasty cake pops made with love by Jolina, owner and baker extraordinaire of Zoey's Delights

Replaced

Morning conversation with Ashley....
Me: Come right over here and sit by me so we can cuddle.
Ashley: Alright but remember I usually cuddle with Aunt Shawna.
Me: Oh really? Well will I be a suitable replacement?
Ashley: *thinking, thinking, thinking, thinking, thinking for ENTIRELY too long* Um? Sure. I guess so.

And there I have it.

Don't even...

...THINK ABOUT IT.

When I walked past Natalie and saw her sitting like this, I thought it would be funny to pop her thumb right out of her mouth...
...turns out she's got a comeback for that. It's called the double-handed, laced-finger, dont-you-even-think-about-it stance.
Seriously. Check out the way she's pointing at me as if to warn me off.
It's almost frightens me.
Almost.
Well played, Natty Kat. Well played.

The great send-off

After a wonderful lunch at a new local hot-spot followed by sorbet in the mall, my (now past) director convinced my boss and I to try on those crazy (and might I add UGLY) Fivefinger brand shoes.
I can say, without a doubt, I'm not made for such hippiness. Aside from the fact that they're just plain hideous to look at, my crooked toes don't appreciate being forced into the straight position.
Regardless, it was a nice afternoon and a great way to exit my career at PSU.
So long Vikings! Hello Full Time Stay At Home Mom (a title I hold near and dear to my heart!).

Left-to-right
Me, the director and my boss
It's always fun times working with 2 such itty-bitty people
Seriously. This is the epitome of ugly. And I can't even say they're function over fashion. Because they barely function!!
Cheeeeeeese!

Such a popular day!

Seems this time of year is pretty popular for birthdays. Which makes sense if you count back 9 months. What else could there possibly be to do on a rainy fall day?
This morning the girls belted out some birthday wishes to a crew of special people: Aunt Jean, Ray Ray and Uncle Isaiah (actually his special day was yesterday but Ashley reminded me on the drive in this morning that she didn't get a chance to sing to him).
Happy birthday wishes coming your way, guys!
And Jean, I'm not so sure what rendition of Happy Birthday Ashley was singing. But it seems she's got Christmas on her mind....

It's safe to say life is good.
Here's to memories we'll make as we live the next 8!

So long 7 year itch!

Today Jake and I celebrate our 8th wedding anniversary. Which means it's officially permanent since we made it through the 7 Year Itch.
I suppose I'm okay with that.
I love you, Jake. It's possible we are the perfect couple with the perfect family. Let's not let the pressure of that get to us. Happy anniversary!

What's the buzz about?

I can't figure out where or why it started, but if we are in the car, you can bet the girls are on the look-out for bee boxes.
I don't get it.
I've tried, but I just don't get it.
Especially considering Ashley is just about as scared as a 4 year old can be of bees.
We were driving home from Mom and Dad's house a few weeks back and Ashley spotted this colony of bee boxes. I love the way they blend in with the white clover (I think it's clover; I'm far from being an expert), which stands out dramatically against the green trees and skyline.
Ashley asked over and over if we could get out and try the honey that would have been in the boxes. I tried to explain that it doesn't exactly work like that, but she wasn't having it.
Her philosophy is simple: bee boxes equal bees which equals honey.
Oh the cut and dried mind of a 4 year old.

To bee or not to bee

The black plague

What started as a stomach bug quickly turned into an epidemic as it worked its way through 11 people in just 14 days.
It.was.brutal.
Jake and I stole away for a few hours to a friends graduation party, leaving Shawna and the girls at home. We'd been gone for a few hours when Shawna texted with an "Ashley just projectile vomited all over the green couch. Everything is ok. Just FYI." message. They had just returned from the park and we were all hoping she had drank too much and ran too hard, but when Shawna texted again about 30 minutes later that she spewed a second time, I realized we hadn't dodge the bug that was working it's way through the family.
Of course I'm above pointing blame, but if I weren't I'd totally be pointing fingers at little Wyatt Lee who lovingly shared the bug with my girls.
But of course I'm mature enough to EVER point fingers....
We quickly headed home, straight into the fire. It wasn't 30 minutes after we got home that Natalie took a seat on the vomit comet, and before long the girls were throwing up every 5-10 minutes, within 30 seconds of the other one.
What a welcome home for Shawna, eh?
While I was cleaning up Ashley and Jake and Shawna were dealing with Natalie, Ashley asked "Why did Natalie puke?" And I responded a very simple "Looks like Natalie caught your bug, Ashley." She thought about this for a second and then broke into a smile and said "Natalie has my bug. Thank you, Natalie! I won't be sick any more!"
It was so sweet and innocent the way she believed she'd actually be healed. If *only* it worked like that!
It turned out to be a long night. A VERY long night. I'd like to think Jake and I are well versed enough in parenting to handle two erupting minis, but I'm not so sure we would have made it through this without Shawna and her extra set of hands. Because, trust me folks, when you've got two minis puking at the same time, every 5-10 minutes, it's nearly impossible to keep up with the buckets and clean towels.
Did I mention it was brutal?
Sometime around 11 pm both girls finally fell asleep, but would wake up every 20-30 minutes to vomit. By this point we had properly trained them to hit the bucket, although Natalie was quickly over it. Even if you weren't in the room, you always knew when Natalie was going at it because Jake would repeat "In the bucket! In the bucket! In the bucket!" as he held her down and wrestled her head into her bucket.
Brutal.
Lucky for us both girls were so physically exhausted that they'd immediately fall back to sleep after each 'episode'. It was both heart breaking and a relief to see them sleeping together on the floor, sharing a giant pillow for their weary little heads, a bed made out of about 6 pillows and 8 blankets. I finally convinced Shawna to hit the hay around 1:30 am, Jake fell asleep on the couch around that same time, and I camped myself on the floor next to my minis and slept off and on (mostly off) until 5 am when Ashley woke for the day.
All said and done Ashley threw up 27 times between 5:30 pm Saturday and 6:30 am Sunday and Natalie came in a close second with 17 eruptions between 6:30 pm Saturday and midnight.
Believe me yet that it was brutal?
Sunday was spent recouping on the couch, although Natalie bounced back freakishly fast. She was eating everything in site all.day.long. Meanwhile Ash stayed pretty lethargic, running a low-grade fever for most of the day. By Sunday evening they were both back, 100% after a nearly 4 hour nap for Natalie and 2 hour snooze fest for Ash and I.
But the fun didn't end there.
Monday morning around 3 am Jake woke and it was obvious by the sounds coming from the bathroom that he had been infected. Poor guy spent about 5 hours praying to the porcelain gods. Around noon he declared "I don't have time to be sick, I've got too much to do", and he headed off to the shop. Shawna had spent the day with Ashley at Mom and Dad's so it was just Natalie and I at home. Jake seemed to be recouping at the same lightening speed as Natalie, although he said he'd likely skip dinner that night.
Around 5 Monday night, right about the time I was making dinner, a giant wave of nausea rushed over me and had me hitting my bed, curled into a ball, waiting for what I knew was coming. It was about that time I learned that Shawna had also retreated to her room as she hadn't been fortunate enough to dodge the puke bullet.
If you know me and my unfortunate history with stomach bugs, you know 9 times out of 10 they land me in the ER where I get fluids and anti-nausea meds. I've got a delicate body that doesn't appreciate illness and is easily dehydrated despite my best efforts to keep the liquids flowing. Around 9 pm I waved my white flag and had Jake take me to Labor & Delivery (L&D) where the poor nurse had a major struggle hitting a vein and starting an IV line. And by major struggle I mean she finally got it started on the 5th poke.
Seriously battered and bruised.
I got 2 bags of fluid and 2 doses of Zofran (anti-nausea med). They also monitored the contractions the dehydration was exacerbating just to make sure little Thirdling was holding out better than I was.  We lucked out and got placed in an actual L&D room where they have plush, over-sized chairs that are 1000x more comfortable than the typical doc's office chair you'd fine in the L&D exam room, so it wasn't long before Jake was curled up with a pillow and blanket, snoozing away. 2 nights of no sleep had him worn to threads. I did manage to catch a few winks in the L&D bed despite my bruised hands and painful IV in my arm. Lucky for me a Cake Boss marathon was playing on TLC so at least I had Buddy and his amazing cakes to keep me company, even though cake was the absolute last thing I wanted.
I was discharged at 5:20 Tuesday morning armed with an RX for Zofran. We headed home to find Shawna on one couch and Ashley on the other. In true Ashley-fashion, she sensed something off and woke up around 4 am upset that Mommy and Daddy weren't in their room. Jake coaxed her back to bed around 5:45 where she slept until after 8. Natalie, on the other hand, was playing 5 Little Monkeys in her crib around 7:15 am. Because the plague had already spread through Danny and Kathy's house, Kathy told Jake to bring the girls down for the day so that Shawna and I could rest and recover.
Did you ever know Kathy is like an angel in disguise?
Shawna and I spent Tuesday holding down the couches, watching bad TV on MTV and crazy talk shows. We did a little napping, very little eating, and enough hydrating to keep things safe, but not so much that we'd upset an already delicate system. By Tuesday night we were both open to eating a light dinner, at which time I felt confident in saying we were going to survive. Cause let me tell you, it was a close call.
Our entire house has been cleaned and sanitized since the debacle. There's no possible way we ever want to go through that again. It was brutal.
And icky,
And I'm over it!

Happy Flag Day!

Maybe you forgot? Maybe you don't care? Maybe you didn't even know? But today, June 14 is Flag Day, the day the US Congress adopted the flag of the United States. Since it's not a national holiday, Flag Day doesn't get too much attention. And unless your town displays American flags down it's main street (good for those that do!), you may not have given it a second thought. But it's still a pretty cool day; the day we officially became the nation of red, white and blue. Our beloved stars and stripes.

Happy Flag Day!

Little sneak

This picture (taken during Christmas Eve dinner) just came across the screen saver on my computer; I've seen it no less than 100 times and I still giggle at Natty's sneak-peak. I swear if you could tap into her mind this is what you'd hear:
"So Papa's on my left and over to my right I've got Aunt Shawna and they're both praying. Reverently I might add. My eyes are supposed to be closed, but my hands are folded in prayer, so that's gotta earn me some brownie points, right? Aunt Shawna's roll seems close enough, but it still may be out of my reach. I bet I could stretch just far enough to get my fingers on it. Hm? It may be worth a shot. How much longer on this prayer, Papa? A Spunky's gotta eat. Let's get to the 'Amen! already, dude."
And yes, yes I admit that instead of having MY eyes closed and hands folded, I opted to snap a pic of my youngest mini when she thought no one was looking. Don't worry, I said about 20 Hail Mary's before I took my first bite. Even though I'm not Catholic, I figured it couldn't hurt.
PS you can click on the picture to view it larger and then just press the "back" button on your browser to get back to the blog

Patiently waiting on the "Aaaaaamem"

A note from Mommy...

Dear teeny person currently occupying my uterus who, as of yet, remains nameless:
Please be aware that my bladder is not an adequate dance floor for you to practice, what feels like, your tap dancing routine. I do not appreciate the shuffle-ball-changes, time step or even the more advance shuffle-toe-combo. While I encourage movement and dance, I do so AFTER you've been evicted. While you remain in those tight quarters, peace and gentle movements are preferred and expected.
Please be advised, I will not hesitate to poke back when/if you poke at me.
Consider yourself warned.
All my love,
Mommy

Tuesday Tidbits

Ungh! I wish I could capture it on camera but Natalie is singing her ABC's more and more often these days, and with greater accuracy, too. It's the cutest darn thing, ever! Maybe one day I'll get to share it with you?

A memorable Memorial Day

This year we packed up the girls and the car and headed to Angie's in LaPine for the weekend. We didn't leave Friday night until after 6, which turned out to be a blessing because it meant less traffic and the opportunity for the mini's to sleep in the car.
At least we got the less traffic bit.
The girls finally passed out about 40 minutes before we pulled into Angie's driveway; they were so excited to spend the weekend with Hannah and Christopher that they were just too wound up to sleep. But before long The Sand Man got the best of them and they were out.
If only they had stayed that way.
Friday night sleeping arrangements were painful at best. All 4 of us were in the same room, which would have been fine had it not been for Natalie, our resident Houdini, popping out of her Pack 'n Play, claiming "Me sleep with Mommy and Daddy!" and hopping into bed with us. Ashley had a great bed made on the couch in the room and slept like an angel the entire time. Once we finally got Natalie to stay in and sleep in her bed, it was nearly midnight. So when she whispered to me at 5:15 Saturday morning "Mommy, me sleep with you?", I pulled her into bed with us just hoping she'd go back to sleep so that the rest of us could catch a bit more shut eye.
Wishful thinking.
I think we managed to keep her in bed until 6 or 615, at which time Jake took her out to watch cartoons and I caught a few more winks while Ash snored away in her bed. By 645 all of us were up and at em for the day.
I'm sure this didn't please Angie.
Saturday we took all 4 of the kiddos to Pappy's Pizza in Bend where they have an indoor play structure. Hannah and Christopher are so wonderful with Ash and Natty; I don't think we saw the girls more than 10 minutes the entire 2 hours we were there. They were climbing and sliding and wiggling and playing all throughout the play structure. It was exactly what the girls needed. And Daddy and Mommy, too! It also gave us the chance to chat with Angie and Chris, something we don't get to do nearly often enough.
Thankfully Saturday night the girls were both so exhausted it didn't take much coxing of any kind to convince them to hit the hay. After a little self-tanning lotion, my purse and lipstick set-back, we finally got Natalie down for the count (by this time it was nearing the 9:30 mark). Lucky for us both girls slept until after 7 the next morning, which was incredible.
Sunday morning we got up and ready and headed off to church. Ashely was apprehensive to be left in her classroom as she was the first kiddo to check in, but the teacher handled it very well and gave Ashley snack duty. Between that and the promise of visiting the playground outside, Ashley was all in! After church we ventured to the Old Mill District for some lunch and a walk along the river. About halfway through the walk there's an awesome play structure and climbing rocks. Again, it was Hannah and Christopher to the rescue! They climbed and followed and played all over the place with the girls, adequately wearing them out.
I couldn't have been happier!
We left Sunday night around 8:30 and pulled into our drive around 11:45. Ashley and Natalie finally passed out around 10, but not before we discussed all of the fun things they had the chance to do over the weekend. Both were *obsessed* with volcanoes and learning the names of each and every mountain and butte we passed. If you've ever traveled to Central Oregon, you know that left plenty of opportunities for discussion.
Plenty.
Thanks to Angie and Chris for opening their home to our hurricane. Extra special thanks to Hannah and Christopher for keeping the girls occupied and playing with them, nonstop, all weekend long. It was a great weekend!
PS I have other pictures from this trip, but they're on my camera; these are just shots I captured with my celly. I'll get to sharing the camera shots. Someday.

Saturday morning all 4 of the kiddos snuggled onto the couch, watching cartoons
Saturday night after a long and hard day of playing - this was the second attempt at putting her to bed. I took this after she dug through my purses, painted her face with my lip stick and rubbed herself down my self-tanning lotion. She was anti-Pack 'n Play so I stayed in bed with her until I was sure she was good and out. I couldn't resist snapping a pic of her sweet little sleeping face - I rarely get to see her sleeping.
After Jake moved her to her bed, I had to capture her sweetness (and stillness!)
Midget passed out, sawing logs, catching Z's
The mini's enjoying Sunday afternoon lunch at Jimmy John's - haven't had JJ's since 11/2010 in Rapid City, SD (they recently came to Oregon). Siiiigh. It was just as good as it was back then. Too bad I didn't get to dive into the Italian Night Club sammy like I did back in 2010; Thirdling takes the full blame for this one. Maybe one day I can find it deep in my heart to forgive her?
Crazy rainbow-type thing that greeted us after lunchtime
Who needs the double BOB?
Checking out the ducks and geese on the river
Awesome sculpture-thingy on the walk around the river. It was pretty awesome; there were engine/motor parts inside the horses ("horsepower") and giant chainsaw bars and various other logging parts making up the log (I figured this all out on my own, by the way). Genius. FINALLY! Art that even I can understand!
Next to the play structure were these awesome climbing rocks for kiddos, like Ashley and Christopher, that find it hard to stay at ground-level. Here you see Christopher convincing an apprehensive Ashley to join him at the top...
...and it wasn't long until they were both proudly declaring themselves as King of the Mountain!
PS It was great watching Ashley play with Christopher. She can be somewhat cautious when it comes to certain things, but all of her inhibitions seem to go by the wayside when she's playing wingman to Christopher. It's also nice because, like Ashley, Christopher's energy supply seems to be endless. :)

Of course the next obstacle that presented itself was "How on earth do I get down?" That's where Daddy the Great comes in. Here's Jake coaxing Ashley down the side of the rock...
...but even that got to be too cumbersome. So instead Jake convinced Ashley to just jump into his waiting arms. This is probably my favorite shot of these two. Here's Ashley placing complete and total faith in Daddy. Little does she know she'll still have that feeling 30 years from now. Lucky Midget.
For months and months Ashley has wanted to play on one of these "Twisty Poles" (as she's aptly named them), but she neither knew how, or trusted herself. Luckily it was Christopher to the rescue...
...and it wasn't long until she was twirling down the pole. Over and over and over again.
This is the toy that stole Natty's attention; it was made to resemble a waterwheel and when turned, the little blue beads inside would scatter and make a cool rain-sound. I should know. I heard it for 10 minutes, straight.
Again, here's Christopher convincing Ashley life outside of your comfort zone is where it's at. Earlier she had attempted this climbing structure but backed out after making it up 4 or 5 rungs. But with Christopher at the top, she went for it, and then was so proud of herself when she reached the summit!
Not sure exactly when it happened, but at some point Natalie's lack of sleep the night before hit her full-force and she decided to take a rest, juice in hand, and recharge her batteries.
I was told, by Natty Kat, "Mommy take picky (AKA picture), I make face!" And a face she made!
It was nearing time to leave, which meant the kiddos wanted just 1 more round of rock climbing
1 seriously happy Midget
Of course it meant Daddy had to catch a flying Midget again, but I doubt either one minded. One loves being in Daddy's arms. And the other? The other is thrilled to be needed by the little spirit that made him Daddy for the first time.
Adorable
1 cool Daddy and Mommy

Carnival cuties

Our girls look forward to our local elementary school's PTA carnival every year. This year Jake was stuck in traffic in Portland, so I had the pleasure of wrangling both mini's all by my lonesome. I knew it would be hard, exhausting work, but I also knew they'd enjoy themselves, which was all the more reason I just had to take them.
I'd do just about anything to make these 2 littles happy.

First things first - dinner!
Going fishin' for some good stuff
Apparently when you're a little person, you get to walk right up to the table and drop your ping-pong ball into the fishbowl. Good to know.
Trying her luck at the cake walk
Midget got a ringer!
Taking a break to enjoy some cotton candy
Such a sweet, innocent looking face. Key word in that phrase is *looking*.
It took Spunky 4.67 second to turn into a sticky, icky, cotton candy mess
Midget was allowed to hold one of the rabbits in the petting zoo - in case that smile isn't clue enough, she felt like a rock star
