Last week Keely braved her way through her 6 month well-child check. In addition to the normal height and weight check, the 6 monther also means vaccinations.
Out of all of the girls the award for Most Upset When Getting Poked goes to Keely Q. Ashley would cry for 10 seconds. Natalie would cry for 15 seconds and shed 2 tears. Keely Q cries for about 30 seconds, sheds a handful of tears, and then whimpers off and on for another minute. To be perfectly honest, tears brought on by vaccination shots doesn't upset me because I know the benefit of being vaccinated FAR outweighs the short-lived discomfort. Sure, having to deal with a cranky baby the next 24-48 hours sort of sucks, but it's over soon enough. Unlike her sisters, Keely always seems to get a fever a few hours after her shots. Hate seeing her so pathetic, but I know it's all for good reason.
Keely Q has *finally* doubled her birth weight! She was 7# 3oz at birth and weighed in at a perfect 14# 6oz. Usually babes double their birth weight by 5 months, so Keely was just a tad behind schedule. Her weight puts her in the 22%; she's our lightest 6 monther, ever. And at 25.5'' long, 46%, she's also our shortest chitlin.

I had reason to believe there was left-over fluid in Keely's ears from her ear infection (EI) 15 days prior. I don't own an otoscope, I don't have Go Go Gadget x-ray vision, I don't even have an MD behind my name, but I *know* when an EI is brewing. I certainly owe Natty Kat credit for my Super Powers; if she didn't have 20+ EI's in 4.5 months, then I wouldn't have had the opportunity to perfect my skills. Unfortunately there isn't anything that can be done about fluid in the ears if it's not infected even though it causes pressure and discomfort. Sometimes it can take a month (or more!) to clear out. Our plan of attack at her appointment was to just wait and see and pray it didn't get infected. Too bad not even 48 hours later I was back at the pedi's office because, like so many times before with her sister, I *knew* an EI was among us.
Keely's reflux was addressed. For now she'll continue to get her daily dose of Prevacid. One of these days I'll have to snap a shot of Keely's face when she's taking it. For a while I thought she was just being silly and making stink-faces so I decided to steal a taste....bad idea! Just imagine if you took 10 lbs of dirty socks, soaked them in a vat of vinegar and then added melted head cheese. I'm certain even that concoction would taste better than liquid Prevacid. But it works. So for the time being she'll have to power through the nastiness. Poor Keely Q.
We discussed Keely's vast palate of foods. To date she's had: carrots, sweet potatoes, peas, green beans, corn, green zucchini, yellow zucchini, peaches, acorn squash, butternut squash, pears, pumpkin, avocado, applesauce and banana (All homemade by yours truly. Yes, I'm that kind of wonderful.). It's great because she hasn't met a food she doesn't like, but it's also cumbersome because the child does.not.poop. I thought Natty Kat had a sucks-every-drop-of-water-out sort of colon, but it seems Keely Q is going to give her sister a run for her money. At this point her plum juice doesn't seem to get things moving, so I'm going to do a bit of research on pro-biotics and see if I can't find some that don't contain dairy proteins (this is the part of the dairy she's allergic to). Poor thing needs help in the "getting moving" department.
All-in-all it was a good appointment. Shots. Stats. Shits. Now that I'm a mom of 3 I'm beginning to understand the 3 common S's of well-child checks.
Rocking the 6-month grin (and duck-fuzz hair!)
